Hanya Yanagihara: A Little Life

Moji kriki navdušenja v prvi tretjini Yanagiharinega romana o štirih prijateljih niso bili redki. Svojo okolico sem moril s citati in primerjavami s Franzenom. Pobrskal sem celo za podatki o meni neznani avtorici in prebral njen intervju.

Yanagihara se klesanja osebnostnih profilov Willema, Malcolma, JB-ja in Juda loti počasi in z guštom. Nestrpnega bralca bo v hipu odpihnilo, potrpežljivemu pa bo branje nudilo obilo užitkov. Na začetku.

Os zgodbe se kaj kmalu začne vrteti zgolj okoli Juda, trije, še posebej JB in Malcolm, pa postanejo rahlo zapostavljeni planeti, katerih edini cilj je vrtenje okoli osrednjega lika. Več kot obrobneža, ki ne spada mednje:
He had been the first to arrive in their room, and when the second boy came in  it had been Malcolm - with his parents and suitcases and books and speakers and television and phones and computers and refrigerator and flotillas of digital gadgetry, he had felt the first sensations of sickening fear, and then anger, directed irrationally at Ana: How could she let him believe he might be equipped to do this? Who could he say he was? Why had she never told him exactly how poor, how ugly, what a scrap of bloodied, muddied cloth, his life really was? Why had she let him believe he might belong here?
Roman je strašljiv v grozljivih podrobnostih, a to sploh ni njegova težava. Težava je v Judovi inertnosti in neverjetni vztrajnosti prijateljev, ki ga podpirajo zdaj tu, zdaj tam. Zgodba zategadelj popolnoma zastane in zvodeni.

Yanagihara bo letos verjetno pobrala bookerja, kar bo še en izmed veličastnih mimosunov.
